Definition of Homework or Home Study
In this policy ‘homework’ refers to any
work, research or other activities related to learning which
pupils are asked to do outside lesson time.
Purpose
Commitment to the school’s homework policy
is an important part of the home school agreement designed to
improve pupil motivation, progress and attainment.
Ofsted
Advice from the Government is that ‘homework is important
at all stages in a child’s education and can extend the
challenge open to the pupil ensuring teaching time is used to
maximum effect’.
Aims
The aims of homework are to:
- ensure learning in the classroom is consolidated or reinforced.
- extend learning, for example through additional reading, enquiry or
research tasks.
- encourage pupils to develop the study skills, confidence and self
motivation needed to learn effectively on their own. These
skills are essential for life long learning.
- enable pupils to manage particular demands effectively such as
preparation for tests and SATs.
- encourage a partnership in learning between pupil, parent and teacher.
Notes
Reading Homework
- Each night has a reading time
given. This is in response to the new Government initiative to
help improve children’s standard of literacy.
- The official guidelines state that
in years 6 & 7 children should be reading on their own, or to
their parents, for 20 minutes a night. This figure rises to
between 20 to 30 minutes in years 8 & 9.
- A record of the literature read
should be made in the ‘other activities’ section in the Pupil
Planners.
Subject Homework
- Each of the core subjects of
English, Mathematics & Science sets three homeworks (or its
equivalent) per week in all Years.
- Humanities sets two homeworks (or
its equivalent) per week in all Years.
- French sets two homeworks per week
in Yrs 7, 8 & 9 & one homework per week in Yr 6.
- Art and/or Design Technology sets
one homework per week in all year groups.
- Music homework is not given on a
weekly basis throughout all four years but it is related to
certain projects as they occur.
- Learning Support homework is given only if appropriate for the
individual pupil.
Recording Homework Details ·
- Class tutors should ask pupils to
write in the subjects for homework for the week according to the
homework timetable.
- Class tutors should explain to pupils that where possible they should
complete homework tasks according to the homework timetable.
Delaying tasks until the night before they are due in will lead
to an irregular quantity of homework each night.
- Subject teachers must endeavour to
ensure that pupils write down homework instructions in the
correct place and that the date for completion is entered.
- Planners should be checked at
regular intervals by parents, class tutors and subject teachers
to ensure good working habits are being developed by the pupil.
