Science Department

Ofsted quote: "Lessons are well planned, stimulating and challenging. Pupils respond enthusiastically and enjoy learning."

Science is essential in understanding ourselves and the world around us. Our course teaches pupils the subject’s key facts and concepts. It also develops pupils’ ability to carry out experiments and investigations safely and accurately.

The subject is taught by specialist staff in four modern and well-equipped laboratories. Two of the laboratories have been extensively refurbished to improve facilities for electronics and computers. Both these laboratories have Internet access and projector facilities connected via fibre optic cable to the main ICT server.

We present science as a co-ordinated course that allows the traditional subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics to be readily identifiable. Each pupil is allocated a Science Tutor who will monitor their progress carefully and will be a familiar point of contact for parents. From the start of Year 8, our maximum group size is 25 pupils.

The department won high praise from the HMI as being one of only 50 science departments in the country to achieve consistently high value-added performance in Key Stage 3 SATs.
