Humanities Department
Ofsted quote: "The Humanities subjects are
a particular strength of the school with consistently good
progress throughout."
In Humanities we study people - as
individuals, groups, communities and societies. We study them in
different places and in different times. Our work covers not
only the National Curriculum subjects of geography and history,
but also religious education. In all three subjects children are
encouraged to use a variety of methods of presentation, both
oral and written. The work is supported by a wide variety of
resources including local visits and trips to places of
geographical and historical interest.
Geography
Ofsted quote: "Teaching and Learning is
successful because pupils are active learners."
The geography course promotes an
understanding of the nature of the earth's surface, the
character of places, the nature of people's relationship with
the environment, and other geographical concepts and skills as
laid down in the National Curriculum.
History
Ofsted quote: "Progress is very good
because of positive attitudes and the very effective teaching
that enables pupils to develop. "
The history course covers a variety of
periods of history, as laid down in the National Curriculum.
These are used to develop general skills such as the
organisation of research, as well as specific history skills
such as the ability to use historical concepts and ideas, to
deal with historical evidence and to develop a sense of
chronology.
Religious Education
Ofsted quote: "Both boys and girls achieve
well throughout the school because they are keen to learn and
are taught consistently well."
We study all the world's major religions,
together with their origins, history, beliefs and practices. The
course follows the Agreed Syllabus for Leicestershire. The aim
of the course is to help pupils gain an insight into what
religion is and how it is expressed. Throughout the course,
Christianity is studied each year with two other studies of
major religions being studied over four years (Parents have the
right to withdraw their child from RE lessons and should seek
advice from staff if wishing to do so). |
